Bessent Says Growth Is the Way Out of $40 Trillion Debt

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the United States would have to grow its way out of its national debt after a reporter asked about the debt passing $40 trillion.
Bessent said the administration planned to outline a U.S. growth strategy and encourage other countries to follow it. He added that he had been tasked with examining fiscal consolidation.
The Treasury secretary also expressed confidence that Section 301 tariffs would restore tariff income to at least the previous year’s level. He blamed the size of the deficit on the Biden administration and said the deficit as a share of gross domestic product had fallen by more than one percentage point in 2025.
